Morris
Material Handling recently installed two of their new range of S3
overhead travelling cranes and supporting steel gantries at Wessex
Water's waste water treatment works at Avonmouth.
Wessex Water
is the regional water and sewage company providing water supply
and sewerage services across an area of the south west of England
covering 10,000 square kilometers including Dorset, Sumerset, Bristol,
Bath, most of Wiltshire and parts of Gloucestershire and Hampshire.
The new remote controlled Morris S3 cranes will be used for the
maintenance of the plant equipment at the site.

These 1 and
2 tonne overhead travelling cranes have replaced a selection of
freestanding and wall mounted jibs at the plant in order to increase
the safety and efficiency of the plant operations. Mark Lodge, Morris
Material Handling's Sales Manager, said "we won this order
as a result of our crane building expertise and technology".
The experience
of Morris' in-house engineering and installation engineers played
an important role in the design and installation of the cranes to
suit their harsh operating environment. This includes being outdoors
in a corrosive industrial smog area, above water treatment channels
about a mile from the coast of Avonmouth Harbor. The cranes were
specially coated with protective paint and fitted with stainless
steel bolts and fastenings. The supporting steel gantries were also
painted and galvanized with anticorrosive paint to protect them
from corrosion.
Both of the
cranes span 10 metres and are fitted with Morris' market leading
S3 hoist units, which are ideally suited for outdoor use. These
hoists incorporate the latest state-of-the-art technology, which
protect the equipment and its operator, extend the equipment's life
span and enhance performance. These cutting edge features which
are part of the hoists standard specification include advanced condition
monitoring, load limiters, thermal overload protection, fan cooled
motors and IP55 sealed protection from dust and water. In addition
Morris also fitted the cranes with protective hoist canopies.
Following the
installation, the Morris Training Institute provided Wessex Water's
plant maintenance team with tuition in safe crane operation. Slinging
and centre of gravity assessment is included in this instruction,
along with basic un-laden control and Lifting Operations and Lifting
Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER).
